Reports to the deputy warden. Responsible for providing academic instruction to detainees in accordance with approved curricula. Provides detainees with basic direction in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and customer directives.
Plan and conduct classes for detainees in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED), life skills, cultural awareness, health education and special curriculum and other subjects selected to correspond with the ability and limitations of the class.
Prepare special teaching plans, courses, activities and learning experiences appropriate for the specific detainees assigned.
Utilize appropriate audio and visual teaching materials individualized to the specific need of the detainee.
Administer individual educational tests and learning aptitude tests and use the results for prescriptive instruction.
Participate in staff conferences or in an endeavor to develop and improve educational programs.
Counsel and advise detainees on academic problems.
Coordinate activities and classes in conjunction with appropriate school districts or other involved parties.
Assist in developing program and related educational materials as necessary for the establishment and maintenance of assigned classes.
Adjust material and curriculum to the individual differences of the detainees assigned.
Confer with detainees and deputy warden to evaluate results of conducted classes.
Requires long periods of standing in a class room setting.
Regular attendance is required.
Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed.
Maintain accountability of detainees and property; adhere to safety practices.
It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her scope of work as determined by management.
Education and Experience Requirements:Bachelor’s degree and valid teaching certification required. ESL and special education certifications are also required if instructing in these areas. One (1) year of related experience is preferred. Must successfully complete required pre service training. Valid driver’s license in the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
Post Hire Requirements:
Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements and maintain appropriate facility clearance
